[HouTango-L] Tango This Week (2/11/19)

Opera in the Heights presents Piazzolla's

        Maria de Buenos Aires

The pulsing rhythm of the streets, a woman possessed,
and her dance of life and death.

        Feb 15 at 7:30pm, Feb 17 2pm, Feb 21 at 7:30pm, 2/22, 2/23

        https://www.facebook.com/events/205421000398050/

        Opera in the Heights
        1703 Heights Blvd, 77008

        https://operaintheheights.secure.force.com/ticket

In the slums of Buenos Aires, there lived a woman named
María, who people say was “born on the day God was
drunk.” She is seduced into a deadly underworld by the
spirit of tango. Astor Piazzolla’s intoxicating nuevo
tango music and the dreamy poetry of Horacio Ferrer,
driven by the enthralling rhythm of an Argentine tango
orchestra, will transport and transfix like nothing heard
or seen before on the Oh! stage.

"This Opera is one of the reasons I fell in love and
began my tango journey. I still have the poster! It’s
amazing today I get to be part of a Houston production
under an exceptional stage and artistic director and
talented group of artists - singers and musicians. This
weekend and the following weekend at Opera in the Heights"
            -- Susana Collins

        Saturday, Feb 16, 7:30pm to 9:30pm
        Lambert Hall
        1703 Heights Blvd, 77008

        https://www.facebook.com/events/800139830330186/

What happens when you combine classical music with the
        Argentine Tango?

        Tangodromo!!!

The legendary Astor Piazzolla started this intoxicating
concoction of musical styles about 50 years ago, and
our guest, the modern day bandoneon virtuoso JP Jofre is
continuing this tradition in his compositions.

Come, join the Axiom Quartet as they perform Piazzolla's
“Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” alongside JP Jofre’s
“Tangodromo for Quartet and Bandoneon” on February
16 at 7:30pm at Houston’s landmark Lambert Hall!

Native of San Juan, Argentina, Juan Pablo Jofre Romarion
(aka JP Jofre), is an award-winning bandoneon player and
composer. Mr. Jofre has been repeatedly highlighted by
the New York Times and praised as one of today’s leading
artists by Great Performers at Lincoln Center. His music
has been recorded by 16 Grammy winner Paquito D’ Rivera,
        Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and choreographed/performed
by ballet-star Herman Cornejo (Principal Dancer of the
American Ballet Theatre) among others. He has performed
and given lectures at Google Talks, TEDtalks, The Juilliard
School of Music, The New School, etc.

A recipient of the National Prize of the Arts grant
in Argentina, Mr. Jofre has collaborated with many
famous musicians in a wide range of musical styles,
including Paquito D’Rivera, Kathryn Stott, Symphony
Silicon Valley, Santa Rosa Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta
Sinfónica Nacional de Argentina, San Antonio Symphony,
San Diego Symphony, Philippe Quint, Fernando Otero,
        and Fred Sturm among others.

        Practica con Accento

        Three more Tuesdays: Feb 12, 19, 26

        7:30pm to 10:30pm

        Be In Tango
        411 Westheimer Rd, 77006

Practica follows the Level 2 class, all levels are welcomed
and encouraged to join us for practice.

Our goal is to provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive
space for all to practice their skills. Everytime you
practice you improve your own skills and the quality of
dancing in the community, so we celebrate it with each
of you. Ask different people to practice or work with
your dance partner. Practica is hosted by Iryna, so you
are welcome to bring your questions and work through them
with the instructor, or just ask for feedback.

Rules: Everyone (despite dancing role) is welcome to
invite/ask anyone to dance. Everyone can say no, and has
right to choose whom they practice with and for how long,
and to be treated with respect. And please do not take "no"
personally. Yet the environment must be safe, comfortable,
and inclusive for all levels, roles, and genders. We do
not practice neither cabaceos, nor cortinas, to avoid
confusion with milonga. Should you have any questions or
concerns, please talk to the organizer.
