Performances of Desesperados are on Thursday, July 14 & Friday,
July 15 at 8:00 p.m. at Barnevelder Movement Arts Complex, 2201
Preston @ Hutchins.

Desesperados is a series of tangos, with choreography by Michele
Brangwen and music by Thomas Helton, that explores the mystique
of this evocative dance and its passionate music.

Once disenfranchised because of its origins as a dance and music
of the people, the tango evokes the complexity and vulnerability
inherent in human interaction. Argentinean Composer Astor Piazzolla
boldly broke the boundaries of what was acceptable for the tango
in the mid 20th century. Desesperados uses contemporary dance
and avant garde music to journey further into new territory.

Performers are Deanna Green, Arneita McKinney, and Michele
Brangwen, dancers; Greg Harbar, accordion; Vladimir Kotsiouruba,
violin, (of "The Gypsies,"); Thomas Helton, string bass; and
Sandra Tapia, actress.

New music works without dance will include Arthur Gottschalk's
Voices in My Head, a work for percussionist and electro-acoustic
sound environment created from sounds of the rain forest recorded
by the composer. The performance features Alec Warren, percussion,
and accompanying video by Yunuen Perez Verti.

Complimentary Argentinean refreshments provided by Europa
Cafe. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 students and seniors,
and can be purchased at the door or shortly in advance on line.
